White Fillings & Onlays We offer beautiful white fillings as a standard restorative treatment for repairing teeth, damaged by decay or trauma.

Nowadays white fillings, also known as ‘composite’ fillings, are highly wear-resistant and are the ‘go to’ procedure for repairing cavities in teeth.

In certain instances, a Dental Onlay may be recommended as an alternative to a White Filling for a molar (chewing) tooth that has too much damage for a filling, but still has enough healthy structure to avoid a full dental crown.

Composite White Fillings

White fillings have the benefit of greatly improving the aesthetics of your smile.

Unlike traditional grey amalgam fillings, white fillings are made of a resin material whose shade can be matched to your natural teeth. They are a popular choice if you want your fillings to be less noticeable.

At Dentistry on the Grove white fillings account for more than 98% of all the fillings we do.

Dental Onlays

A dental onlay is recommended for heavily worn, decayed or broken teeth instead of a Filling

Onlays – also called inlays – are custom-made laboratory restorations.

We take a digital impression of your tooth with our 3d intraoral scanner and can then print your onlay in-house using our SprintRay 3-D printer using a special type of composite resin.

This is designed to fit precisely onto the chewing surface of your tooth and due to the precision of the digital impression fits perfectly into your bite

What our patients say

Amy took a great deal of care with a difficult filling on a back tooth and I’m very pleased with the outcome. I’m no stranger to the dentists chair and I think Amy is probably the most skilled dentist that I’ve had.

Paul Burgess

My appointment with Mike yesterday went really well. I was nervous and he took the time to explain things, I didn’t feel rushed and the filling already feels normal and comfortable. I didn’t get the nurses name but she was equally friendly and reassuring. The reception staff are also lovely too. Thank you

L. Devereux-Gilbert

Staff are very welcoming, and the waiting area is relaxed. I had two fillings replaced, and the procedure was totally painless. I am very pleased with the end result and even considering replacing a couple of my older fillings. Very professional setup, and I would highly recommend this practice.

A. Crisp

Very good experience; had 3 fillings by Amy the dentist & assistant Ausra

Frequently asked questions

Why do I need a filling?

The most common reason for needing a filling is to repair a cavity in your tooth caused by decay. If the decay is not removed and the cavity filled, the decay will progress and eventually enter the pulp chamber of the tooth causing an infection. At this stage you will need a root canal filling or an extraction.

What are fillings used for?

Fillings are the most common dental restoration and are used to repair cavities caused by dental decay.

What are composite fillings?

Composite fillings are tooth coloured white fillings that can be matched to your existing teeth. They are made of a premium material, called composite resin, a very durable material.

Do you still use amalgam (grey) fillings?

Yes, there are certain occasions when it is appropriate for a dentist to use amalgam. Amalgam may still be required when it is very difficult to control moisture levels while completing the filling (eg. cavity is near or below the gumline), or when a patient may have a rare allergy to composite materials. More than 95% of the fillings we do are composite white fillings.

When is an onlay recommended instead of a filling?

When a tooth has suffered a large amount of decay with several surfaces of the tooth affected, an onlay may be required.
