Dental Crowns A Dental Crown is a commonly used 'restorative solution' to restore a weakened, compromised tooth to its full aesthetic and function

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped ‘cap’ that is placed over a damaged or worn tooth to improve its strength, function, and aesthetic appearance. It can be fabricated from a variety of materials, including porcelain and ceramic.

Circumstances when a Dental Crown might be recommended

A dental crown or ‘cap’ has many uses but is typically recommended to save a compromised, but viable tooth.

It may be used to:

  • protect a weakened tooth from further damage
  • restore a broken, cracked or severely worn tooth
  • improve the aesthetic appearance of a misshapen or discoloured tooth
  • strengthen a root canal treated tooth (as root filled teeth can be brittle / weaker)
  • cover a dental implant
  • hold a dental bridge in place

We work with some of the best aesthetic laboratories in the UK

Depending on what tooth is being crowned and whether the reason is more aesthetic or functional, our dentists will recommend the best crown material for you, with porcelain or ceramic being the most frequently used materials.

We can also print our own crowns in-house using our 3-D SprintRay printer.

Here are some of our Dental Crown cases

We're proud to have helped multiple patients restore their smiles and confidence with a combination of restorative dental treatments such as crowns, veneers and onlays featured in the cases below.
Our before-and-after results below demonstrate what can be achieved with good planning, precise impression taking and excellent collaboration with cosmetic dental laboratories. Depending on the individual case we also print crowns, veneers and onlays in house to achieve same day smile transformations

what our patients say

I came to Dentistry on the Grove wanting quite a lot of work done professionally, including new crowns and whitening, and I honestly couldn’t be happier with the end result.

One thing that really stood out to me was how everything was handled under one roof. I saw three different clinicians throughout my treatment, and every single one was fantastic, professional, reassuring, and clearly passionate about what they do. The teamwork across the practice made the whole experience feel seamless and really well organised.

Before treatment I felt quite self-conscious about my teeth, but afterwards I felt so much more confident and genuinely pleased with my smile. The whitening and crowns look amazing and completely natural.

Overall, the whole team at Dentistry on the Grove made me feel comfortable and looked after from start to finish. Such a friendly, skilled, and welcoming practice, I’m sooo pleased with the results and would highly recommend them!

K. Cullen

Lovely practice with gentle kind and professional staff. I wouldn’t go anywhere else. Tim and his team are excellent. Painless no rush conservative care in the smart new practice.

A. Simpson

As a SUPER NERVOUS patient I visited Dr Tim after a 10 year break from dental care with a suspected absyss (and a lot of fear!). He was so kind and empathetic and I have remained a very proactive patient ever since. The whole team are a pleasure to deal with and now my son also attends his check ups here because it gives him a wonderful experience (unlike my childhood!) which will hopefully encourage him to take care of his teeth when he’s grown. I’m grateful to the team for always looking after me and my nerves so well!

T. Edmunds

Finally a Dentist which works how it should. Efficient, the latest broad range of care, up to date equipment and tea and coffee. Not to mention fantastic dentists who ‘get you’ and don’t hurt. Highly recommend them

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a custom-made ‘cap’ that fits on top of a weakened tooth to strengten it. It can also be used to improve the appearance of a misshapen or discoloured tooth

When are dental crowns recommended?

A dental crown may be recommended as a restorative dental solution for a broken, weakened or misshapen tooth. A series of dental crowns may be used to restore a mouth of worn teeth.

How many appointments do you need to get a crown?

2 appointments, between 1 to 2 weeks apart. The first appointment is to design the crown and prepare your tooth for the new crown. At this appointment you get fitted with a temporary crown, while your new crown is being fabricated. At the second appointment you will be fitted with your new crown

How long will a dental crown last?

With a good oral hygiene routine, dental crowns can last 10 years or more

Why is it recommended to ‘crown’ a root filled tooth?

If a tooth has been treated with a root canal filling, your dentist may recommend to put a crown on this tooth to strengthen it and increase its longevity. Root filled teeth are more brittle and prone to breaking.
