X-rays and Scans We take routine x-rays and 3-D scans to aid in the diagnosis and planning of your dental treatment

We take referrals from other practices for OPG & CBCT scans

Routine x-rays and OPG scans

When you first join the practice, your dentist will usually take some routine ‘bitewing’ x-rays to check bone levels, for decay under fillings, or for teeth that haven’t come through yet and to investigate previous dental work such as root canal fillings.

Bite-wing x-rays are routine low-dose x-rays and are taken using a small tab which a patient bites to hold the x-ray sensor in place in their mouth. These are included free of charge at your new patient consultation.

It is recommended that bitewing x-rays be re-taken every 2 years to monitor changes in your teeth over time. You don’t need to bring your x-rays from a previous dentist, unless you wish to.

OPGs and CBCT scans

Sometimes more detailed scans are necessary for the diagnosis and treatment of more complex dentistry issues

We have an advanced scanner allowing us to take 2 kinds of more detailed scan.

  1. Pan-Oral Scan, also called an OPG, is a full 2-D scan of your upper and lower jaw in one single image. It may be required for the planning of certain more complex treatments, eg. wisdom teeth extractions, implants and for some root canal work. It is also used in orthodontics to assess how the upper and lower jaws meet, and for general health as it detects cysts and tumours
  2. CBCT scan, ‘Cone-Beam Computed Tomography’, is an advanced 3D scan creating highly detailed, 3D models of your teeth, jawbones, nerve pathways, and surrounding tissues in a single rotation. It is needed when standard 2D scans cannot provide enough detail for accurate diagnosis or treatment planning. It is faster and uses significantly less radiation than traditional medical CT scans.

At Dentistry on the Grove, we take OPG scans and CBCT scans for patients across Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch and the surrounding areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should dental x-rays be taken?

As part of your routine care, it is advised that low dose ‘bite-wing’ x-rays be taken every 2 years. These x-rays will be compared with older ones to monitor any changes over time.

Do you take referrals for OPG and CBCT scans?

Yes, you need to be referred by your dentist to have an OPG or CBCT scan taken at our practice. Our Reception team can organise this for you.

What is an OPG scan?

An OPG is a 2D panoramic dental X-ray that captures your entire mouth – all teeth, both upper and lower jaws, the jaw joints (TMJ), and surrounding structures – in one single image, whereas a small bitewing x-ray focuses on just a few teeth (usually the molars).

What is a CBCT scan?

A CBCT, ‘Cone-Beam Computed Tomography’, scan is an advanced 3D imaging tool. It creates highly detailed, 3D models of your teeth, jawbones, nerve pathways, and surrounding tissues in a single rotation. It is faster and uses significantly less radiation than traditional medical CT scans
