Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic treatment, is used to save a severely decayed or infected tooth, that otherwise would have to be removed. We take external referrals for endodontic treatment.

What is root canal treatment?

Endodontics is the branch of dentistry that focuses on the interior of your tooth, called the ‘pulp’ that contains the nerve and blood supply. The pulp sits in a chamber called the ‘root canal’ situated in the middle of the tooth and extending to the root.

When the pulp gets infected due to deep decay, a root canal filling can save the tooth. The infected pulp is removed using a specialised microscope, the tooth is then carefully disinfected and sealed.

The tooth is no longer sensitive to hot/cold as the nerve has been removed; however as it is structurally sound, you can still feel biting pressure as the ligament is intact.

Our skilled practitioner, Dr Nikos Louskos DwSI (Endodontics) carries out root canal treatment under specialised microscope

He has a Masters Degree in Endodontics from the prestigious Queen Mary University of London. Nikos is a very calm, skilled practitioner who loves endodontics; the branch of dentistry concerned with disease of the root canal, i.e. the pulp chamber of the tooth. He has access to our in-house CBCT scanner to aid diagnosis if needed.

Dr Nikos Louskos also takes patient external referrals from other practices.

How successful is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment has a remarkably high success rate of approximately 95% after 5 years.

The most common cause of failure of a root filled tooth is breakage, as root filled teeth are more brittle, caused by the removal of the infected pulp. Consequently we recommend fitting a strong restoration, such as a dental crown over the root filled tooth – this is best practice and in line with British Endodontic Society guidelines.

Usually after a period of approximately 6 months, your the tooth will be reviewed and if the root canal treatment has been successful, we would then recommend fitting the crown.

Why do I need a root canal treatment?

You may be recommended to have a root canal treatment to save an infected tooth, that would otherwise have to be extracted

Is a root canal treatment painful?

No, whilst it is a longer procedure, it is performed painlessly under local anaesthetic

Will my tooth feel normal after root canal treatment?

Your tooth will no longer feel sensitive to hot/cold, and in most cases be comfortable to chew on after a few days.

I have swelling after a recent root canal treatment. Is this normal?

Yes, don’t worry, this is part of the healing process. Sometimes your body needs a little longer to deal with the remaining infection. This usually settles after a couple of weeks.

Why is it recommended to ‘crown’ a root filled tooth?

If a tooth has been treated with a root canal filling, your dentist may recommend to put a crown on this tooth to strengthen it and increase its longevity. Root filled teeth are more brittle and prone to breaking.
