Worn Teeth Worn teeth are a common problem causing both anxiety about your smile and teeth sensitivity

Whilst some wear and tear occurs naturally with increasing age, some people experience accelerated wear leading to shortened, yellower sensitive teeth.

We have multiple solutions to restore worn teeth.

The Impact of Worn Teeth

Worn teeth can affect our confidence. Worn or shortened teeth affect the beauty of our smile, that prematurely ages the face.

Worn teeth also cause functional issues. Shorter, flattened teeth make chewing more difficult and can put additional strain the jaw muscles.

Furthermore worn teeth lead to sensitive teeth. As the protective top layer of enamel gets eroded, the underlying dentine layer is exposed, triggering sharp sensitivity to hot or cold foods.

We can offer several solutions to restore worn teeth. These include composite bonding to rebuild shape, porcelain veneers for durable aesthetics, and dental crowns to fully restore severely damaged molars (chewing teeth).

The main causes of Worn Teeth

1

Attrition (or Bruxism)

Teeth grinding and teeth clenching wear teeth down over time. This usually happens when we are asleep and during periods of high stress. This leads to wearing down the biting and chewing surfaces of our teeth, and may lead to cracking our teeth

2

Erosion (caused by acid)

Over time the teeth enamel is dissolved by coming into repeated contact with acid. This may be due to diet (fizzy drinks, wine and citrus fruits) or health issues such as acid reflux and bulimia

3

Abrasion

This is caused by repeated friction on the teeth, for example, overly aggressive teeth brushing, biting/chewing on hard items such as pens or constant nail-biting etc

-using a combination of the above dental solutions

Example of the Restoration of severely worn teeth

This gentleman attended the practice with severely worn teeth due to acidic erosion of the enamel of his teeth. He assumed he would have to have all his teeth extracted and wear dentures.

We took a CBCT scan and were able to assess the roots of our patient’s teeth and the surrounding bone levels which were good. Despite the extensive wear we were able to restore his back teeth over a couple of appointments and we performed a “Same Day Transformation” using our in house 3-d printer to restore his front teeth with composite crowns.

The patient was delighted with his result and could smile again!
